A pair of Murano glass wall sconces worked in the graniglia technique, each shade formed from ribbed, fluted clear glass with fine glass shards embedded through the body. The shards scatter the light into a soft, diffused glow, and the scalloped edges and textured surface give the glass real depth. Each shade sits on a polished brass fixture that warms against the clear glass.
The sconces come from Murano, Italy, in the 1980s, when the island's workshops were still producing hand-formed glass to the standards that made Venetian glassmaking famous. Rather than a single named maker, they belong to that living Murano tradition, where clear glass was worked with embedded colour and texture to catch the light.
The graniglia technique is what gives the glass its character. Small fragments of glass are embedded into the clear body as it is formed, suspending flecks of texture through the shade so the light passes around them. The fluting is drawn into the surface by hand and the edges scalloped, a second layer of craft that diffuses the light further. Each shade is genuinely hand-made, so no two are identical.
The pair suit an entryway, a bathroom, or an accent wall, and bring a warm, ambient light to a period, mid-century, or contemporary Australian interior. As a pair they work well flanking a mirror or a doorway. Both are in very good-excellent vintage condition, complete with their brass fixtures.
