A pair of wall sconces faced with a geometric grid of capiz shell, each small pane held in a warm brass frame and finished with a scalloped top edge. Unlit, the shell has a soft pearl sheen with faint natural veining. Lit, it glows a warm, milky gold and hides the bulb completely, so the light reads as an even wash with no glare.
These date from 1960s Italy, a period when Italian lighting workshops were pairing brass metalwork with natural materials in place of glass. Capiz, the thin translucent shell of the windowpane oyster, was a favoured choice for its pearl-like surface and the gentle quality of light it gives. The scalloped crest is typical of the decorative, slightly playful side of Italian design in that decade.
Each shell is cut flat and set individually into the brass grid, so no two panes are quite alike. The natural variation in thickness and grain means every pane passes light a little differently, giving the face of the sconce depth and movement that a sheet of frosted glass cannot. The brass framework has mellowed to a soft patina that suits the tone of the shell.
At 24cm square they are well sized for a hallway, either side of a bed, or as low-level lighting in a living room. The shell and brass bring warmth to contemporary minimalism and sit easily against the timber and VJ walls of a Queenslander. Presented in very good-excellent vintage condition and in full working order, with character consistent with their age.
