A pair of tall, narrow wall lights, each built from 20 solid glass bars stacked in a tight geometric grid. Clear glass alternates with amber, giving the columns a warm, honeyed tone even when unlit. With the lamps on, light pushes out through the gaps between the bars and lays a ladder of pattern and shadow across the wall and ceiling.

The design is by Albano Poli for Poliarte, the Italian studio he founded and the maker most associated with this stacked-glass approach to lighting. Poliarte's 1970s production belongs to the brutalist side of Italian design: weighty, architectural and led by the material itself. Matched pairs are harder to source than singles, which adds to their appeal for collectors of the period.

Each bar is a solid length of glass, set at right angles to the one below so the stack locks together as a lattice. The faces and cut ends of the bars each handle light differently, so the glow is broken up and textured instead of even. The amber bars warm the output while the clear bars carry the brightness, and the brass mount behind adds a soft golden reflection through the grid.

At 21.5cm high and 11.5cm wide, the slim upright format suits flanking a mirror, a bedhead or a doorway, and works well in a hallway where depth is limited. The amber and brass sit naturally against the timber of a Queenslander and bring warmth to contemporary minimalism or a warehouse conversion. Presented in very good-excellent vintage condition, with the light patina expected of pieces of this age.
