A single wall sconce built from 30 thick glass bars, stacked in crossing layers to form a square grid that sits proud of the wall. Clear bars alternate with brown, so the piece reads as a block of warm and cool tones when unlit. Switched on, the light breaks through the gaps and edges of the glass and throws a sharp geometric pattern across the wall and ceiling around it.

This sconce was designed by Albano Poli for Poliarte, the Italian studio he founded and the name most closely tied to this style of sculptural glass lighting. Poliarte pieces from the 1970s sit firmly in the brutalist tradition: heavy, architectural, and built around the raw character of the material instead of decoration. They have become sought-after among collectors of Italian lighting from the period.

The construction is what sets it apart. Each bar is a solid length of glass, laid at right angles to the layer beneath so the stack locks into a lattice. The cut ends and faces of the bars catch and bend the light differently, which is why the glow is broken and patterned and never flat. A chrome backplate sits behind the glass, reflecting light forward through the grid and giving the clear bars their brightness against the brown.

At 22cm square it is compact enough for a hallway, stairwell or bedside, and has enough presence to hold a wall on its own. It suits the clean lines of contemporary minimalism and warehouse conversions, and the brown glass sits comfortably against the timber of a Queenslander. Presented in very good-excellent vintage condition, with the light patina expected of a piece of this age. Only one available.
