Vintage Italian Demi-Lune Brass Wall Hooks

An Italian wall hook from the 1950s, built as a half-moon of hand-chiselled perspex sitting flush against a brass support that anchors it to the wall and forms the hook itself. The perspex carries fine tool marks across the front face, which catch light differently from any angle. At 14 by 14 centimetres with an 8.5 cm projection, it is sized for one heavy garment or a couple of lighter pieces.

Perspex was still a relatively new material for decorative work in the 1950s, having moved out of wartime aviation use into Italian design only over the previous decade. Italian workshops were among the first in Europe to treat it as a material worth carving and finishing by hand rather than moulding and polishing flat. Pairing it with the country's already established brass-fabrication tradition produced a small body of hardware pieces like this one, sitting between domestic fitting and small sculpture.

The half-moon face is chiselled by hand, the cuts running across the front in short strokes that read as deliberate texture rather than tooling marks left behind. The brass support is a single forged piece, shaped to wrap the perspex from behind and then drawn forward into the hook. Patina across the brass is original, with warmer honey tones at the wear points and darker oxidation settled into the recesses.

Suited to entry walls, bedroom robes, bathroom hooks for towels or gowns, or hallways in a Federation home or Queenslander where the brass picks up existing trim. Four are available, which makes them workable as a matched run along a single wall or paired across two surfaces. Brass and perspex both retain original character, with patination consistent with seventy years of careful use.
