Pair of Iceglass Wall Lights by J.T. Kalmar

A pair of mid-century wall lights by J.T. Kalmar, pairing Murano ice glass with brass hardware. The glass has the frozen, irregular surface of its name, thick and tactile in the hand, and it breaks the light into a soft frosted glow rather than a direct beam. Against it, the aged silver adds a line of warm metal that keeps the composition crisp.

J.T. Kalmar is one of the defining names in Austrian lighting, and by the 1960s the firm was known for fixtures that treated glass and metal as equal partners in the design. This pair belongs to that period of confident modernism, when ice glass moved light away from the bare bulb and turned the shade itself into the event.

The appeal of ice glass lies in its uneven surface. Ridges and hollows vary the thickness of the glass across each shade, so light passes through at different strengths and the surface seems to shimmer when lit. The brass hardware is kept simple and purposeful, holding the glass securely while leaving its texture as the focus of the piece.

At 18cm high and only 8cm deep, the frosted glow softens the bright white walls and brings texture to a pared-back contemporary interior. In very good-excellent vintage condition.
