French Burgundy Twin-arm Ceramic Wall Light

A single twin-arm wall light built on a hexagonal ceramic base glazed in deep burgundy, a colour that reads closer to garnet as the light moves across it. Two brass arms sweep out from the base in long organic curves, each finished with a crisp white linen shade that softens the light into a warm, even glow. The contrast of dark glaze, warm metal and pale fabric gives the piece a strong architectural presence on the wall.

French ceramic wall lights of the 1950s brought together artisanal pottery and modernist form. Workshops across France, with Vallauris the best known of the ceramic centres, paired glazed bases with brass hardware to make fixtures that sat between decorative object and working light. The maker of this piece is unrecorded, but the curved arm profile places it firmly in the organic modernism of post-war European interiors.

The hexagonal base gives the glaze flat faces to settle across, so the colour deepens at the edges and catches highlights on each facet. The brass arms are shaped in a continuous line from mount to shade, with no visible break in the curve, and decades of use have given them a natural patina that adds depth to the metal. The matching shades are made to measure after purchase, keeping proportions true to the fixture.

Mounted in a hallway, beside a bed or above a console, it casts light both up and down the wall. The burgundy glaze suits the timber and painted panelling of a Queenslander, and adds colour to a pared-back contemporary interior. In very good-excellent vintage condition, with white linen slip shades included.
