Pair of Italian Pencil Reed Pendant Lights

A pair of Italian pendant lights in spiral-wrapped pencil reed, shaped into a distinctive pyramid, hourglass silhouette. The split reed is wrapped by hand around the frame, and the natural rattan and bamboo give each shade a warm, textural surface that glows softly when lit. Adjustable black cords let you set the drop to suit the ceiling.

The pendants are Italian, from the 1970s, drawn in the style of Gabriella Crespi, whose organic, sculptural work in natural materials shaped much of the decade's Italian design. They are not attributed to Crespi herself, but they belong to that same mid-century Italian tradition of turning rattan and reed into sculptural, architectural lighting.

The making is in the wrapping. Each length of split pencil reed is bound in a tight spiral around the pyramid form, a labour-intensive technique that gives the shades their ribbed texture and holds the shape. The rattan is intact and the construction is clean throughout, marks of careful mid-century craftsmanship rather than mass production.

The pair suit a kitchen island, a stairwell, or a dining setting, singly or together, and settle into a contemporary, coastal, or transitional Australian interior where the natural texture can be felt. The adjustable cords make them practical across varied ceiling heights, at home or in a commercial space. Both are in very good-excellent vintage condition.
