A single wall sconce in glazed ceramic, modelled as a stylised seashell with ribbed fans opening out from the base. The glaze is a deep emerald green with a high gloss that picks up light across every ridge, so the colour shifts from near-black in the hollows to bright green on the raised edges. At its centre stands a ceramic candle, complete with modelled wax drips, which houses the socket.
French ceramicware of the 1950s embraced natural forms, and the shell was a favourite motif of the period, drawn from a long decorative tradition reaching back through Art Nouveau to the rococo. Potters of the era brought it into the post-war home in bold, saturated glazes, and green was among the defining colours of mid-century French interiors. The maker of this piece is unrecorded, but its form and finish sit squarely in that regional tradition.
The ceramic body carries a thick glossy glaze that pools in the recesses of the shell and thins across the ridges. That variation is what gives the surface its depth: the glaze reads darker where it sits heavy and lighter where it runs thin. The candle detail is a piece of design wit, with drips sculpted into the clay rather than painted on, and it neatly conceals the electrical fitting behind a period-correct form.
At 22cm high it suits a hallway, a powder room or the wall beside a bed, where the green glaze reflects a soft glow onto the surrounding surface. It brings colour and shape to a white-walled Queenslander and works equally well in an eclectic interior layered with timber and textiles. In very good-excellent vintage condition. 1 available.
