A 1970s Italian wall sconce shaped as a demi lune, a low crescent of hand-blown Murano glass that mounts horizontally to the wall. The glass holds the kind of soft surface movement that only comes off the Murano furnace, as if the form was caught in the moment the maker pulled it from the pipe. Light reads through the body of the glass and out along the curved edge, giving a soft horizontal wash rather than a directed beam.
Murano has been the centre of European glassmaking since 1291, when Venice moved its furnaces to the island to keep the city safe from fire. By the 1970s the island's studios were producing some of their most expressive sculptural work, with sconces and table lights pushing toward the language of glass sculpture while still functioning as lighting. Demi lune wall pieces from this period sit firmly inside that movement.
The crescent body is hand-blown in one piece, then shaped against a mould to hold the demi lune curve while the glass is still soft. The wall mount is a separate element, a white lacquered support that sits flush behind the glass and disappears against a pale wall so the eye reads only the floating crescent. The fluid surface variation across the front face is the signature of free-blown Murano work, no two pieces from a run are ever identical.
A piece for walls where horizontal light suits the architecture, the long hallway of a Queenslander, above a console in an entry, beside a bedhead, or as a paired set in a contemporary living room. The low profile sits close to the wall, so it works in spaces where a deeper sconce would catch a sleeve. Glass and mount both retain original character, with patination consistent with five decades of careful ownership.
