A five-arm chandelier by Barovier & Toso, each arm formed from torchon hand-blown Murano glass that twists the light into a soft, ribboned glow. The arms curve out from a central brass frame in a balanced, sculptural arrangement, and the piece carries real weight and scale on the ceiling. Lit or unlit, the glass holds a depth that only genuine Murano work achieves.
Barovier & Toso are one of the longest-running glassmaking families on Murano, with a documented lineage on the island reaching back to the 13th century. By the 1940s the studio was producing some of the finest Italian lighting of the period, pairing established mastery of hand-blown glass with metalwork that reflected the cleaner geometric vocabulary moving through Italian design. This chandelier sits squarely within that body of work.
The torchon technique gives each arm its character. The molten glass is worked and twisted by hand as it is blown, drawing a spiralling ribbon through the body of the glass that catches and bends light along its length. No two arms are identical, a signature of hand production rather than a flaw. The brass frame that holds them has aged to a warm patina, and the join of glass to metal shows the level of craftsmanship the studio was known for.
The chandelier suits a formal dining room, a generous entryway, or a period interior where its scale can be read properly, and it works equally well as a considered contrast in a pared-back contemporary space. At 102cm high it needs ceiling height to sit well. It is in very good vintage condition, with the patina and wear consistent with its age and provenance.
