Barovier and Toso Torchon Curled Armed Pendant Light

An Art Deco pendant light by Barovier & Toso, built around a sculptural bowl of their signature torchon Murano glass. The glass is hand-formed with an undulating, rippled surface that diffuses light into a warm, soft glow. Curved brass arms sweep up to frame the bowl and carry the fixture, giving it both height and a sense of movement.

Barovier & Toso are among the most established of the Murano glassmaking families, with a lineage on the island stretching back centuries. By the 1940s the studio was producing lighting that paired its deep command of hand-blown glass with brasswork drawn from the cleaner lines entering Italian design. This pendant belongs to that period, where Venetian glass tradition met the geometry of modernism.

The torchon technique is what gives the bowl its texture. As the molten glass is blown it is worked and twisted by hand, drawing the rippled, ribbed surface that runs across the piece and breaks the light as it passes through. The brass arms are shaped with a deliberate curl, a detail characteristic of mid-century Italian work, balancing geometric structure against the organic form of the glass. The brass has settled into a warm patina that complements the glass.

The pendant suits a dining room, an entryway, or a stairwell where its 110cm drop can hang freely and be seen from below. It reads equally well in a period Australian interior or as a warm contrast in a contemporary, pared-back space. It is in very good-excellent vintage condition, with patina consistent with its age and provenance.
