A tripod table lamp in solid brass, its stem cast and detailed to read as a length of bamboo, complete with the swollen nodes and segmented joints of the real plant. The brass carries a warm patina that has built up over decades of handling, deepening the colour and softening the shine. Standing on three slender legs, it has the upright, sculptural presence of a piece of metalwork rather than a plain lamp base.
The lamp is attributed to Maison Bagues, the Parisian house known through the mid-century for its decorative metalwork and its fondness for botanical forms rendered in brass and bronze. Faux bamboo was one of the house's recurring motifs, prized for the way it let a hard metal mimic a living, organic line. The casting quality and the precision of the nodes here are consistent with that body of work, placing the piece within the refined Parisian design of the 1950s.
The bamboo effect is built by casting, where the brass is shaped to hold the irregular nodes and the subtle taper of a real cane rather than a uniform tube. That asymmetry is the tell of careful work, since a node that lands too evenly reads as fake, while these sit with the slight unpredictability of the plant. The tripod base does the structural work, splaying three legs for a low, stable footprint while keeping the visual weight light beneath the rising stem.
At 39cm it sits comfortably on a console, a bedside table or a desk, where the brass throws a warm reflected light once shaded. It suits a Queenslander, a renovated apartment or a contemporary room that wants one piece of genuine French provenance carrying the corner. A custom linen shade is made to order after purchase, so the proportion and tone can be matched to your interior. In very good vintage condition, with the warm patina intact and continuing to develop with use.
