A twin bowl pendant by Barovier & Toso, built around a central looped brass frame that suspends two hand-blown Murano glass bowls in balance. The loop reads as an architectural gesture in its own right, holding the two luminous sources at a poised, deliberate distance. Each bowl carries subtle shifts in tone and texture across the glass, so the light it throws is layered rather than flat, warm where the glass thickens and clearer where it thins.
Barovier & Toso are among the longest-running glassmaking families on Murano, with a documented lineage on the island reaching back to the 13th century. By the 1940s the studio was producing some of the most accomplished Italian lighting of the period, pairing generations of hand-blown glass mastery with metalwork that answered the cleaner, more geometric vocabulary moving through Italian design. This pendant sits squarely within that body of work, a maker at full command of both materials.
Each bowl is hand-blown, which is why no two read identically and why the surface holds the depth that machine-made glass never finds. The brass loop is the engineering as much as the ornament: it carries the weight of two bowls, keeps them level and turns the suspension itself into the design. Brass and glass play off each other through the piece, the metal catching a hard highlight while the glass releases a soft, diffused glow beneath it.
At 110cm it is built to hang with presence over a dining table, in a stairwell or in an entry with the ceiling height to carry it, where the twin bowls wash light downward and outward at once. It suits a Queenslander with generous ceilings, a warehouse conversion or a contemporary room that wants one piece of genuine Italian provenance doing the work. In very good vintage condition, with the character of authentic age intact.
