Pair of Art Deco Alabaster Wall Lights

A pair of French wall lights from the 1940s, carved from genuine alabaster and built around the tiered, stepped silhouette of the late Art Deco period. Each shade rises in clean geometric layers, and the stone's natural veining runs differently across the two, so no panel repeats. Lit, the alabaster turns from cool white to a warm, honeyed glow as light passes through the stone itself.

These belong to the French Art Deco tradition of carved alabaster lighting, a category that flourished as designers moved toward geometry, symmetry and luxurious natural materials. The stepped form is one of the period's signatures, each tier casting its own line of shadow down the wall. As a genuine vintage pair rather than a reproduction, they carry the proportion and material confidence of work made when this style was current.

Alabaster is worked by hand, cut and ground to a thickness fine enough to pass light while keeping the stone's depth and veining visible. That translucency is the point: instead of sitting in front of a bulb, the stone holds the light inside it and releases a soft, even glow with no glare. The shades are carried on white lacquered supports that hold them flush and let the geometry read cleanly. Both pieces have been resanded and polished, lifting decades of surface dullness and bringing the veining and translucency back to life.

A matched pair suits symmetrical placement, flanking a bed, a mirror or a hallway, where the diffused light is softer and more flattering than overhead fittings. They settle naturally into a Queenslander hallway, a warehouse conversion or a contemporary room that wants a single sculptural period note. In very good vintage condition, resanded and polished, with the original patina and character of genuine age intact.
