A French three-arm chandelier carved from wood, with three arms radiating from a central turned column, each ending in a woven jute shade. The turned-wood spindles run along the arms and column, and the natural shades diffuse a warm, ambient light. It is a fixture built as much from sculpture as from function.
The chandelier is attributed to Charles Dudouyt, working in France in the 1940s. Dudouyt was known for an organic approach to modernism, bringing sculptural woodwork together with natural materials rather than the metal and glass of his contemporaries. The piece reflects that signature, and the French artisanal woodwork of the period more broadly.
The craftsmanship is in the turning. Each spindle is worked by hand, and the arms are matched around the central column so the three shades sit in balance. The jute shades are woven and wrapped to soften the light and add texture against the wood. The finish carries the variation and patina of genuine age, the marks of a piece made and used across decades.
The chandelier suits a period interior, a dining room, or an entryway where its scale and natural materials can be read. At 70cm high it needs a little ceiling height to hang well, and it brings warmth to a mid-century, eclectic, or contemporary Australian space. It is in very good-excellent vintage condition.
