Large Amber-Red Barovier and Toso Wall Light

A large wall light in deep amber-red Murano glass, its sculptural shade worked with a pixelated surface that breaks light into hundreds of small points of colour. Switched on, the glass glows from within, warm at the centre and deepening to red at the edges, while a clear glass rim catches a fine line of light around the outer edge. A matte black mounting base grounds the piece against the wall.

Barovier & Toso is one of the oldest glassmaking houses on Murano, with the Barovier family's work on the island traced back to the 13th century. Through the modern period the firm became known for lighting that applied centuries of Venetian technique to contemporary form, and this 1990s design sits firmly in that tradition: bold colour, controlled shape and glass that does the work of the light.

The texture comes from small fragments of coloured glass fused into the molten gather during blowing. Each fragment softens and bonds into the wall of the shade, leaving a mosaic-like surface rather than a flat tint. Because the fragments vary in thickness and density, light passes through them unevenly, which gives the glow its depth. The clear rim is applied separately, a deliberate contrast that frames the colour and shows the precision of the maker's hand.

At 35cm wide, these lights hold their own on a large wall, flanking a bed or lining a hallway. The amber-red sits well against white walls and timber in a Queenslander, and adds warmth to concrete and steel in a warehouse conversion.
