Classic Graniglia Murano Glass Sconces

A Murano glass sconce worked in the graniglia technique, its clear, ribbed glass embedded with fine grained glass shards that scatter the light from within. When lit, the glow is warm and diffused, and the ribbed structure breaks it into soft, layered shadows across the wall. Each piece is hand-formed, so the pattern of embedded glass sits differently in every one.

Murano has been the centre of Italian glassmaking for centuries, and graniglia is one of its more distinctive decorative methods. These sconces come from the 1980s, when Murano workshops were still producing hand-formed glass to the same standards that made the island's name. Rather than a single named maker, the piece belongs to that living Murano tradition of clear glass worked with embedded colour and texture.

The graniglia technique is what gives the glass its depth. Small fragments of glass are embedded into the clear body as it is formed, suspending flecks of colour and texture through the piece so the light passes around them. The ribbing is drawn into the surface by hand, adding a second layer of diffusion. Each sconce is paired with a solid brass back plate and a precision-turned circular brass support screw, a clean fitting that holds the glass securely and adds warmth against it.

The warm output suits a contemporary, mid-century, or transitional interior, and the sconces work well in a living room, a hallway, or as bedroom accent lighting, singly or as coordinated pairs for a symmetrical arrangement. Genuine Murano glass ages gently, developing a subtle patina that deepens its character. Four are available, allowing for matched pairs across a space. Each is in very good-excellent vintage condition, and includes its brass back plate and circular brass support screws.
